Question:
I'm worried a cotton pillowcase will cause breakage.
Answer:
Cotton pillows don't break hair so long as you wear it in a protective style. I use a cotton pillowcase (but I have a higher thread count sateen version that's a little slippery). Satin or silk pillowcases are great. I'm sure they're better than cotton as far as cutting down on friction on your hair, so if you are nervous about it, please do get the satin or silk pillowcase.

My concern is that people often seem to think all they have to do to protect their hair is get a silk or satin pillow case. They might think they can now sleep on their hair lose, or treat it roughly because they blame their breakage on the cotton, and think the silk or satin will prevent it. I think it's more important to wear our hair in a protective style and be very gentle with it than worry about cotton or satin. But the best thing of all would be a protective style, careful care, and a silk or satin pillowcase. It sure wouldn't hurt to use one.
