*This is still a work in progress. I'm continuing to add many more questions, and we are still ironing out a few quirks. But we wanted to make this available as soon as possible.

Question:
My hairdresser wants to straighten my mixed daughters' hair, but I worry that sends the wrong message.
Answer:
My heart totally goes out to what you and your daughters have been going through with their hair. I'm so glad you didn't let the hair dressers put chemicals on her sweet little curls. Helping your daughters learn how to care for and love their natural hair will mean so much to them as they get older. I can't imagine how wonderful it would have been to grow up knowing that the hair that grew out of my head was beautiful just how it was. It took me nearly 30 years to find that out. Because of you, your daughters will have the best chance of knowing this. You are totally right that by making it seem the only acceptable way for them to wear their hair is to straighten their poor sweet curls, would send them the message that the hair that grows out of their heads is so unacceptable that it would be better to use caustic chemicals or burn them rather than see their own curls. Thank you thank you for showing them their curls are wonderful just how they are.

I put up the site in the first place because I wanted to see to it that no one else with hair like mine has to go through what I did any longer. Our curls are so beautiful. All we need to do is to learn what they need, and they are so joyfully happy. And once we learn to care for them without damaging them, they just grow and grow (and people with straight hair will start to come up to you and your daughters to compliment them on their gorgeous curls, and tell them how much they wish they had curls like hers).

I really appreciate you taking the time to write me. It takes strength to stand against people who are supposed to be experts about hair, but you are absolutely doing the right thing. I wish more moms were like you.
