Question:
What was it like growing up mixed?
Answer:
My identity issues growing up mixed seemed to surround my hair, it seemed. It was like my hair symbolized my otherness when I was being raised by my dad and his wife (both white), and there was no one anywhere who had crazy hair like mine, not on that side of the family (all white), not in the town we lived in (also Brisbane, but in CA), and in my schools. So I walked around feeling like a freak with mutant hair. I guess that's why hair became such a big deal to me, and when I finally figured it out, and saw it was nothing like the monster I'd thought it was, I really want to make sure no one else goes through what I did with their hair.
